5 - DINING OUTDOOR LIVING

Homeowners might want to update their properties depending on the season, but it’s a bit unrealistic to redecorate every time the weather changes. However, there are some subtle interior design changes that makes a big difference to how rooms look and feel. Here are some tips on brightening up your décor for springtime.

Bring the outside in

Nothing says ‘spring’ like plenty of greenery and floral arrangements, and this year the trend to bring the outside indoors is bigger than ever.

After homeowners were forced to stay inside during lockdowns, those who lived in flats and urban spaces felt the need to transform their properties so they could still feel close to nature within their four walls. That is why many people now keep indoor gardens, fill their bathrooms and hallways with evergreen, and grow herbs on their windowsills.

Interior design leader at IKEA UK and Ireland Clotilde Passalacqua told Living Etc: “Linking your indoor and outdoor space is a clever and simple way to make your home feel bigger, whilst inviting the calming energy and natural materials from the outdoors, inside.”

She recommended having vases with colourful flowers to “add a pop of colour to your table” and swapping furniture for more rustic and sustainable pieces.

More colour

Many of us are looking to brighten up our homes, after the gloomy couple of years we have had. That’s why adding more colour to walls, furnishings and furniture will become popular this spring.

Those who don’t want a complete design overhaul can simply add some brightly coloured décor, such as a bold lamp or stylish pillow.

Homeowners who are feeling a bit braver might want to redecorate a room entirely by painting the walls in a loud, vibrant shade. This will complement fresh flowers, the bright sunshine, and the warm feeling springtime brings.

Think about textures

One way to incorporate this warm ambience in your home over the brighter months is by adding texture to your décor. Mixing and matching textiles and patterns will be a big trend this year, so don’t be afraid to pair metal hardware, which lends itself to the industrial look, with velvet cushions or soft throws.

This can add a fun element to your design, and make it feel more homely and personalised during the warmer months.

Back to nature

The Scandi interior design has been around for a few years, but it remains popular thanks to its rustic features that make people feel at one with nature.

Add a wicker egg chair, rattan furniture and wood burner to your patio this spring, or place faux fur throws on the coach and woollen rugs on wooden floors for an authentic but homely look. Muted colours, woven textiles, and sustainable materials all create a calming and airy atmosphere.

According to Scandinavia Standard: “Nordic design principles of craftsmanship, quality, and enabling a better day-to-day are a natural bedfellow for sustainability, which naturally seeks to return to slow, local manufacturing of high-quality products designed to last.”

This explains why it is growing in popularity, as its fresh and wholesome design will last through the seasons.
