How do you bring together classical architecture, refined detailing and modern living without compromising the integrity of any element?

This Mayfair residence answers that question through a considered approach to scale, proportion and interior architecture.

Set within one of London’s most distinguished neighbourhoods, the home spans six floors and carries the character of a Victorian townhouse while supporting the needs of contemporary life.

A vision shaped by architecture

Behind the traditional façade lies a fully reconfigured interior. The design intent centred on clarity, movement and a sense of calm rooted in classical proportion.

Every room was planned to work with the building rather than against it, allowing the natural rhythm of the structure to guide decisions.

First impressions and ground floor living

The entrance hall opens to detailed cornicing, tall windows and a formal dining room positioned for both family gatherings and larger events.

A dumbwaiter links the dining room to the kitchen below, supporting effortless hosting and reinforcing the functional spine of the home.

Bright tones and balanced symmetry create a measured environment that sets the tone for the rest of the property.

Reception rooms with presence

On the first floor, the main reception suite showcases soaring ceilings, plaster panelled walls and a hand carved fireplace.

Natural light fills the space through a bay window that frames the architectural detailing.

The room holds its scale with ease, combining classical structure with contemporary clarity.

A principal suite shaped for privacy

The entire second floor is dedicated to the principal suite.

Two walk in wardrobes, a marble bathroom and a calm palette form a private retreat within the house.

The layout supports morning and evening routines while maintaining a quiet flow between spaces.

Bedrooms and family spaces

Across the upper floors, six further bedrooms provide flexibility for family living.

Each room includes bespoke joinery designed to sit naturally within the walls, preserving usable space and maintaining architectural order.

Light, proportion and functionality were at the core of the design approach.

Lower ground floor living

The lower ground level introduces a dine in kitchen shaped by warm timber flooring, rich marble surfaces and tailored cabinetry.

The palette brings depth without weight, creating a practical and refined workspace.

This level also includes staff accommodation with its own entrance, offering autonomy while remaining connected to the main household.

A contemporary expression of Mayfair living

The interior blends soft whites, gentle pastels and classic furniture that supports comfort and long term use.

Bespoke joinery runs across the project, from wall panelling to cabinetry, acting as a consistent architectural language.

Each piece was designed to integrate seamlessly within the structure, supporting the home’s visual and functional coherence.

This project reflects a focused approach to London interior design, where heritage and modernity are treated as collaborative forces. The result is a home with presence, clarity and continuity, shaped for family life in the heart of Mayfair.

Key takeaways

  1. Classical architecture can support modern living when layouts are planned around proportion, movement and flow rather than decoration.

  2. Reconfiguring interiors behind retained façades allows historic properties to function effectively without compromising their character.

  3. Bespoke joinery plays a central architectural role, providing structure, storage and continuity across multiple floors.

  4. Light and scale are essential tools in large London homes, helping expansive spaces feel calm, balanced and usable.

  5. A joined up interior strategy allows heritage and contemporary requirements to coexist, resulting in a home designed for long term family life in Mayfair.
