9 - BEDROOM SUBSTANTIAL FAMILY RESIDENCE

Now more than ever, when we have once again been told by the government to work from home, it is important to have one room in the house that is a peaceful sanctuary from the rest of the world. In many cases, this will be the bedroom. So what exactly is the key to creating the perfect space to rest and rejuvenate ourselves?

House Beautiful advises that creating a room inducive to good quality sleep should be first and foremost. This means a clutter-free environment, free as far as possible from screens and other gadgets. The bedside table should be there to place a book and water glass on, rather than your phone or laptop.

Colours should be subtle neural shades, rather than bold and vivid. Traditional soothing shades include lavender, powder blue, or light green. If these colours are not to your taste, stick to neutrals with details in oatmeal or beige. For some contrast, pick some warmer brown, grey, or reddish tones.

The furniture should be appropriate for the size of the room. Make sure there is at least 3ft between the bed and the walls or other pieces of large furniture, so you can move about easily. If it is a small room, you don’t need anything in there except a bed, a dresser, a bedside table. A wardrobe and set of drawers could be put in a spare room if possible.

Larger rooms with high ceiling scan be complemented with king-size beds and tall headboards. If there is plenty of space, you could create a private reading nook in one corner, with a comfortable lounging chair and footstool. Alternatively, if you have large windows, you could install a window seat to sit and watch the sunset.

Choose good quality linens and layer up sensual fabrics to keep your bedroom feeling soft and inviting. Complement them with attractive window dressings and textured silk wallcoverings.
